Client Access e il componente MDAC di Windows XP SP2

Installando Client Access su un pc con Windows XP Service Pack 2, scegliendo la modalità “tipica”, il setup installa i driver ODBC compromettendo il componente MDAC preinstallato nella macchina.
La versione originale MDAC installata è la 2.81, cioè l’ultimissima inclusa nella distribuzione Microsoft. Non è però possibile reinstallarla, tentando di risistemare i files corrotti, poichè il singolo setup rilasciato sul sito Microsoft è fermo alla versione 2.80 che individua il componente come più aggiornato e a quel punto si blocca.
Per risolvere il problema e reinstallare l’MDAC è necessario intervenire in un altro modo, come riportato in questo documento che ho trovato su internet.
Se in alcuni casi, pur seguendo queste indicazioni, non si risolvesse il problema sarà anche necessario rimuovere dal setup di Client Access i dirver ODBC.

How to Repair MDAC 2.8 Under Windows XP with SP2 Installed

General Information

Windows XP with Service Pack 2 contains MDAC version 2.81, which is currently not available for download at the Microsoft Web site as a standalone installation. If you try to install MDAC 2.8, which is the latest available standalone download of MDAC, you will receive a message that you already have a newer version of MDAC installed. Therefore, under Windows XP SP2, you must manually repair MDAC 2.81 as outlined below.

How to Repair MDAC 2.81 under Windows XP with SP2

1. Open the folder C:\Windows\inf and locate the file mdac.inf.
Note: Your Windows folder could be named differently, e.g. C:\WinXP

2. Right-click the file mdac.inf and click Install.

3. When prompted for a location, point to C:\Windows\servicepackfiles\i386 (IN ALCUNE MACCHINE CON S.O. PREINSTALLATI LA DIRECTORY POTREBBE ESSERE SOTTO c:\i386 – ndr)

4. When prompted for the file handler.reg, either point to C:\Program files\Common files\System\msadc, or put the Windows XP CD in your CD-ROM drive.

This reinstalls / repairs MDAC 2.81 under Windows XP SP2.
